Petliakov PE-2/PE-3


It's only at the end of war that the occideantals observers can really appreciate the important place handle by the Petliakov PE2. Built during the war this plane was always be accurate and modern.

The initial project began in 1938 and was nammed VI-100 , it was a twin motor high altitude fighter and was designed by Vladimir M Petliakov.
The engine are two Klimov M-105R or M105 RA 12 cylinders in V liquid cooling developping 1100cv
these engine was copied on the Hispano Suiza 12Y
During 1943 the M105 PF developping 1260cv was used.
And the PE-3 Bis model use the fuel injection M107 A developping 1600cv

The high altitude bomber derivated from the initial project ,keep all the aerodynamic caracteristics of the fighter, and the bomber was so fast that she can be escape the ennemis fighters.
The high altitude bombing revealed a lack of accuracy and the PE-2 was fitted with great air-brakes under the wings and was used as a mutli purpose attack plane and as a dive bomber . The was composed of 3 men, the armament was 2 x 7,62mm ShKAS in nose one 7,62mm in dorsal position and one other 7,62mm in rear belly position. The 1000kg bomb load was carried in the fuselage and behind the engines .

On the PE-3 Bis model a 20mm ShVAK and a 12,7mm Beresin was added

During 1942 the rear manually commanded gun was replaced by a servo-commanded turret fitted sith a 12,7mm BS Beresin.

With the Klimov M107 with fuel injection the PE-3 Bis reach speed over 640km/h

Several models stay in project like the pressurised cokpit model designed in answer to the JU288.

The PE-2 R model is a photographic recconaissance model, the cameras was installed in the bomb bay.

The PE-2 UT was the two seat training version.
